Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark

For the majority of my adult life, I lived alone. As a single woman, it can be unsettling to hear things go bump in the night. To make matters worse, I have historically enjoyed reading scary books and watching scary movies. (One in particular that I saw as a young child haunts me to this day.) When I began to live on my own, I had to put a stop to the scary movies and TV shows. They contributed to too many panicky moments in the wee hours. (I still read the occasional creepy story, but I avoid certain topics.)

My husband was out of town all this week, and I made the mistake of watching a TV show that brought those middle-of-the-night chills rushing back.

“I will both lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, Lord, make me live in safety.”
‭‭Psalms‬ ‭4‬:‭8‬ ‭CSB‬‬

I have found that the only things that brings me peace during those late night terrors are verses like today’s verse. When I contemplate God and all that He is, the ultimate power that He holds, and the vastness of His love, my fear drifts away like clouds being burned off by the sun.

God is God — omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient — at noon and at midnight. There is nothing in all of creation to fear when I trust in the Creator.

Dear God,

Thank you so much for your promise of protection under your wings. Thank you for all the times you have told me, “Don’t be afraid. I’m right here.” I’m sorry I keep needing to be reassured. Help me to remember your love and faithfulness late at night when things seem hopeless or out of control or menacing. I trust you to deliver peace at those times.
