The Truth About Alternate Realities

“He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. In him we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1‬:‭13‬-‭14‬ ‭CSB‬‬

In various sci-fi stories I have read, the idea of alternate realities has been described and elucidated. Sometimes the realities are overlapping in some way, other times they diverge from each other after some decision or event. No matter how they are imagined, I find the notion fascinating.

Today’s verse reminded me of the alternate realities described in the Bible (despite it not being a science fiction book). Every day I experience one reality with my five senses, but Paul refers to two other realities that I cannot sense, yet affect me a great deal. He lists the “domain of darkness” and the “kingdom of the Son He loves.” These two realities exist on earth beyond my basic senses.

Originally, there was just one reality that God created for His children. But when we rebelled, a fracture occurred. We let darkness in, and it flooded our world.

I don’t pretend to know or understand the situation fully, but today’s verse makes it clear that I have a choice which realm I prefer to inhabit. If I choose Jesus, I am removed from the dark domain and returned to the kingdom where God lives and loves.

The reality that I can see, hear, taste, smell, and touch may not look, sound, taste, smell or feel any different after making that decision. But behind the scenes, everything is different. I no longer need to fear. I’m no longer ruled by darkness or whims and urges. I have a purpose. And I am known, forgiven, and loved.

Dear God,

Thank you for providing an escape from the dark domain of sin. I’m overjoyed to be transferred to your kingdom of light instead. Thank you for this gift and assurance even though my senses tell me nothing has changed in my surface reality. Help me to live as a citizen of your kingdom, inviting others to join me.
