One King to Rule Them All

“On that day the Lord will become King over the whole earth  — the Lord alone, and his name alone.”
‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭14‬:‭9‬ ‭CSB‬‬

The “Day of the LORD” is a phrase used in many places in the Bible. It seems to mean a few things at once. It refers to the time in ancient Israel when Jerusalem was defeated, and its people sent into captivity. But it also refers to a mysterious future date when Jesus returns to destroy evil and make all things right.

Like I said, this is mysterious!

When I read the rest of the chapter containing today’s verse, it is even more mysterious. Whoa, I don’t understand what Zechariah the prophet is describing.

But that’s okay. Because today’s verse is very clear.

No matter how mysterious or complicated or overwhelming or frustrating or frightening or disturbing or confusing the future seems, it is clear that God will be in control of it all in the end. Our loving, all-wise, all-powerful, beautiful, creative, holy, patient, forgiving God will be sitting on the throne. He will make beautiful and wise decisions. His policies will be perfect. His reign will be glorious and eternal. Every command and law He will enact will be a welcome relief and a joy to obey because of His perfect love and clever goodness.

I can’t imagine such a ruler given the corrupt and flawed leaders that are common amongst us humans. But God’s rule will be ideal. Perfect. An utter delight for those who love the Light! Knowing God, I can’t wait for the Day of the LORD when He takes the throne, once and for all.

Dear God,

Thank you for your promise to come and make all things right and good, and to destroy evil entirely. I don’t at all understand your process or the details, but I trust you because you are love. I long to be part of your perfect kingdom when it comes to fruition. Teach me how to prepare properly and to live expectantly in anticipation of your coming Day.
